Galaga has the same attacking aliens as Galaxian but this time they attack in groups and they have the cool tractor beam ability that lets them capture your ship. You'll need that extra mobility because the aliens in this one -gasp- make attack runs where they break formation and come after you with death dealing bombs. There're no shields like in SI, but your ship is a little more maneuverable. ![]() Galaxian has you in a rocket-launcher mobile base thing that can slide back and forth allowing you to shoot at those tightly formatted packs of hovering alien critters. Galaga and Galaxian are a pair of Space Invader clones that up the ante in the strategy department thanks to a couple of key innovations in enemy abilities. ![]() Quick decision making and development of so-called "patterns" provide the thrills here. Your only weapons are power pills that render the ghosts blue and suddenly edible. Pac-Man and Ms Pac Man ask you to maneuver a big yellow dot around a maze, eating little dots while avoiding evil ghosts that kill on contact. A puzzle game like this is made or broken on the ingenuity of the levels.Gameplay We really shouldn't have to explain the ins and outs of this family of videogame forefathers but we'll give you a quick once-over for those of you that just arrived from Pluto and decided to pick up Nintendo's splendid 3D platform. Where this game excels is in the level design. Pac-Man herself is just a round polygonal sphere with some textures, arms, and legs glued on. The game has the look and feel of a cartoon's minimal lighting effects. Maze Madness graphics are smooth and crisp, but they aren't very detailed. Initially, earning one Star per level will get you to the next stage, but you must go back and earn more stars to unlock later levels. ![]() Players are awarded stars for completing different tasks, such as finding all the fruit in a level, munching all the pellets in a level, or beating the level in time-trial mode. There are blocks to push, TNT to explode, and springboards that propel you upward. Most of the puzzles aren't that hard, but a few will stump you for a bit. Maze Madness is a bit of a misleading title, because while the game does involve mazes, it's the puzzles that will stop your progress. A witch is after the gems, so you must find them all before she does. The play is expanded, but it is largely based on the original. Maze Madness involves a weird story of gems being scattered throughout Pac Land. The most striking change is the game's new 3D orientation. Pac Man Maze Madness takes the original formula and updates it for the new millennium. ![]()
